An Evening Without Kate Bush
Underbelly Theatre, Walker's Court, London W1 | until 26 April 2026
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Review by William Russell
“An evening like no other.”
Kate Bush may not be there – she was last seen in London in 2019 – but Sarah-Louise Young brings her to life in this glorious variation on a tribute show last seen in Soho two years ago but in a shorter version one act version. The Fish people, as Bush's fans are known, turned out for the first night at the Underbelly Theatre and no doubt will do so during the two week run, happy to worship as Young conjures up their idol, sings many of her songs and to join in them as requested. There is a lot of audience participation with couples being taken up on stage to more or less stand there while Young gets on with the gyrating and the costume changes. Just how she gets out of a scarlet body suit into a jet black one is one of those things that adds to the show's numerous delights, as is her way with the voluminous wraps she sometimes puts on. Last time the audience sat at tables and the atmosphere was more of cabaret event. Underbelly, once Raymond's Revue Bar, has a proper stage and somewhat unstable seats – one or two audience members managed to fall off – and rather good lighting so the atmosphere was slightly different but it made no difference. Young and director Russell Lucas in creating a longer show have done no damage and it remains what it always was – a cabaret performer supreme conjuring up Bush, the greatest - and least seen - diva of all. The songs are there from Babooshka to The Woman's Work, Running Up That Hill, and, of course, Wuthering Heights. Go howl along. Go and applaud. Go and have an evening like no other.
