4☆☆☆☆. Review: William Russell.

“A delightful, rewarding play.”

By now one would have thought Natasha Cottriall could perform this funny and perceptive monologue she has written about being young, of mixed race, living in Wigan and thinking you might be Spanish - until you discover your father lives in Jamaica - in her sleep. It has been around for a year or two. Directed by Hannah Tyrrell Pinder it comes up as fresh as paint. Nicole woud like to lose her virginity, works in a dead-end job and is thrust into the adult world when her mother, who runs a sandwich shop, dies and she inherits the business and the problems that involves. She survives with a little help from her no-nonsense grandmother and her own innate common sense helps plus lots of help from the northern soul music she loves, and which provides a background to the monologue. She also comes to terms with having an absentee father, deals with her grief and understands what prompted her mother to embark on a career as the owner of that sandwich shop. It is a perfect fringe show and a rewarding play.
