Surprising and tender climax.
It’s Zed’s 18th Birthday and his mates waiting in the bar have had a whip round. He keeps on telling the head of them, who will keep phoning up to see how he’s getting on, “I’m well up for it.” Lola’s beginning to wonder though. Every time she tries to help him, he shrieks, “just a minute” and she’s face down on the sofa again!
McArthur gives Lola not a clichéd tart with a heart, but one with insecurities and strengths of her own, to go with her understanding of how difficult it is to get it right. Jim Webster Stewart’s Zed is a boy on the brink of manhood, all quivering and uncertain, and you just can’t help but love him for it.
Ann-Marie di Mambro’s written a wee gem of a comic script. In Libby McArthur and Jim Webster Stewart’s hands it receives all the care and timing it needs to bring it to a surprising and tender climax.
David McLellan’s A Play, A Pie and A Pint has brought 90 new shows to lunchtime audiences in Glasgow over the past three years. Now six of them are at the Fringe and some will be doing a tour too. They’re tasty and entertaining and well worth checking out. Next week in Glasgow they’re going to start on another season with plays from well kent playwrights like Rona Munro and David Greig, and from emerging new ones like Morna Pearson and Tom Tabori.
