Review: Mark Courtice 24 August.

Ennui.
For a company at the cutting edge, Precarious have an oddly unsurprising view of the disjunction between the city and the individual spirit. Their productiontoo, while including all the modish elements like video and aerial work, springs few surprises.

Set to a sort of sub-electronic score, its six performers repeat sequences where they wrestle with mattresses (no, I don't know why either) and weave around and in and out of video screens. From time to time they climb around the frame, from which also they hang on cables.

Part of the problem is that all this is not quite well-enough done. The aerial work is tentative, performers move quite out of the primary colour lighting, and the long sequences where they dance in and out of the faux-naif video images are not well-enough timed.

The other problem is the lack of ideas. Even for a one hour show there are few moments of insight, which means too much repetition; and the overall burden that the city is de-humanising and its inhabitants deracinated is scarcely news.

Desperately trendy, this is a strangely unexciting show, featuring talented performers who seem to have little to say, techniques half digested, and ideas half developed.
