Review: Jen Mitchell 1st December 2007.

Another year and yet another hugely enjoyable panto on offer from the Playhouse.
Christmas just wouldn’t be the same in Nottingham without what has become the traditional seasonal offering from Kenneth Alan Taylor and his team.

Familiarity certainly doesn’t breed contempt in this case and the fact that the audience know exactly what to expect, the cast (many of whom return year after year) feel like old friends and we can anticipate and join in with the punch lines to many of the jokes, only serves to add to the pleasure.

Filled with glitz, glamour, sequins and sparkle and that’s just the costumes of the Dames. Jeffrey Longmore and John Elkington, (Sarah the Cook and Mrs Fitzwarren) have become stalwarts of the festive season locally. Their banter, both scripted and ad-libbed, has the audience, and on occasions other cast members, in stitches.

Nathan Dowling returns to Nottingham for the second year and is gloriously guileless as Idle Jack, ably abetted by Richard Kay as his brother Dick Whittington. Jenny Fitzpatrick is a gorgeous Alice and the three of them manage to keep even the smallest children spellbound with their fabulous voices.

Rebecca Little (Fairy Bowbells) gives us the kookiest fairy ever to grace pantoland. John Gully’s King Rat manages to be both menacing and amusing in a King Rat meets Graham Norton kind of way.

Tim Meacock’s glittering design is a spectacular backdrop to this fun filled family entertainment. Another must see for everybody under the age of 97.
