Youth company exhibit high professional standards
One of the most inspiring things about the Edinburgh Fringe Festival is that young people can learn the full array of theatre skills alongside a range of professionals. What's so impressive about the Leicestershire Youth Arts set up is that their professionalism extends throughout the company, from the performers on stage to the Front of House and technical crews. If any of these young people choose to pursue a career in theatre, then they've been given a superb platform.
This production of David Wood's pacey adaptation of Roald Dahl's children's favourite thoroughly enraptured the full house of children and their chaperones. It was performed with huge energy, commitment and sharpness by a cast of six young people. In fact, the spirit of engagement with the audience could teach a few hardened professionals a thing or two about instilling a sense of fun into a show.
This was a true ensemble performance, with tight and witty choral narration and a highly effective multi-purpose set that enabled the actors to zip from location to location. The characterisations were charming and pitched appropriately, with Vikki Hurst particularly enjoyable as the Grand High Witch.
So, if you're choosing a show to see on the fringe, don't discount those by youth companies. They can often produce the most refreshingly lively productions around.
