Panto Nights are here again. Oh Yes they are!
Behind You! Up went the roar from hundreds of voices in the Belgrade auditorium on Friday night. Young and old alike united in vocal enjoyment of the Belgrade Christmas pantomime of Jack and the Beanstalk presented in association with Wish Theatre Ltd.
All the old favourites are there a custard pie-style routine, a rumbustious panto dame from Andy Hockley, Daisy the recalcitrant panto cow, a principal boy to cheer, a beautiful princess for him to fall in love with and a baddy to hiss and boo. In fact, a really good, traditional pantomime.
The set design is stunning and the appearance of Blunderbore the giant very impressive. There are frightened gasps from the younger members of the audience as he thunders in. A gaggle of flower fairies led by a feisty Queen, nicely played by Clare Beasley, whose magical powers over nature and plants neatly explains the beanstalk, and a great routine, written by Graham Pike, from a set of cockroaches dressed in shiny black beetle costumes.
Jack's brother, Simon - the simple sort - leads much of the audience fun and a few references to modern catch phrases from Little Britain and The Catherine Tait Show add to the general fun for adults and children alike. The baddy, appropriately named Fleshcreep, comes to a suitable end, and there are plenty of chances for shouting - Oh yes there are! Simon and Dame Trot lead the audience in the I Like Beanz song which is entered into in rip-roaring spirit. (I think our side of the auditorium was the best). In fact, a good time is had by all. For anyone wanting a traditional, fun family outing this is the one for you. Go along and enjoy!
