Review: Geoff Ambler 26 September at Milton Keynes Theatre (to 30 September)
A magnificent and marvellous evening of distilled clownery of the highest order.
Slava’s show has been marauding around the world receiving award after award and marvelling audiences for more than 13 years and the quality of the current production superbly demonstrates its maturity.
The performers represent every facet of the traditional clown, and Slava’s clowns have turned clowning into an art, a science and a craft of sublime brilliance. From surrealism, through tragedy, to manic hyperactivity, with not a custard pie in sight they succeed time and time again.
Some scenes are so simple that it’s amazing that they are so funny, but they are and, delivered with either consummate mischievousness or tragic pathos, they never fail. With lighting, sound, and extremely clever and usually simple special effects and props the show pushes the boundaries of the technicians craft and ingenuity and the audience are treated to astonishing theatrical art.
It’s a short show but don’t let that worry you and don’t be deceived by the intermission. Stay in your seats and witness the chaotic tidal wave of fiendishly funny buffoons rampage around the theatre. If you sit near the front (be warned that includes the first ten row), keep your head down. Definitely a time for the coulrophobic to get the ice cream.
I’ll not spoil the beautifully-crafted scenes and visual jokes or indeed the finale of the show but I have not had so much childish fun in a theatre ever, and having watched the rest of the audience of all ages leap about Milton Keynes Theatre with abandon I am certain I was not the only one.
