The American arrives in Jermyn Street and brings more wit and wonder.
The fourth in the series of The Jermyn Street Theatres American Songbook in London is a welcome return visit for Jermyn Street regular Steve Ross, and again he has bought another new show with him.
This is the third time I’ve seen Steve Ross in Jermyn Street and each time it has been an absolute delight. Ross has a gift for mixing his selection of music with a smattering of highly illuminating background stories, observations and his own wry wit. This time he again includes more of his own biography, delves into his youth and how he discovered what was to become a life-long passion for the delights of music, musicals and his collecting of “funny” songs. Inspired by 'I’ve Got A Little List' from The Mikado, Ross has assembled an anthology that demonstrate the lyricist's art of timeless humour and presents an evening of endless opportunities for laughter.
To Wit: Ross on Wry is a collection of now mostly forgotten songs, majoring on musical wit and wisdom from the likes of Flanders and Swann, Cole Porter and Noel Coward amongst many, many others. Each is a gem of impeccable wit, effortless comedy and if occasionally bawdy, never remotely coarse as befits the genre. It's humour that remains as funny and relevant today as it was decades ago. As always, Ross brings to his piano an innate sense of musical comedy with his effortless charm, relaxed rapport with the audience and a vocal style that suits his choice of music flawlessly. Another delight on Jermyn Street.
Piano and vocals: Steve Ross.
Introduced by Jeff Harner.
Director : Duncan Knowles.
