Review: Kayleigh Millen, Bournemouth Pavilion, 23rd September 2009
Timeless, Time Warp, or Time and Time Again with Feeling?
That’ll Be The Day is now in it’s staggering 24th year of touring, and for the audience of the Bournemouth Pavilion Theatre, it was clear to see why. The rock n’ roll variety show features timeless classics from some of the music industry’s finest, in a nostalgic trip down memory lane.
From the brightly coloured costumes and slick hairdos, to the dancing and the plasma screen backdrop featuring rock icon images, the atmosphere was simply electric from the moment the curtain was raised. Starting with hits from the fifties including Singin’ The Blues and Lipstick On Your Collar, it is immediately apparent that the show was to be a sure-fire success.
The singers’ harmonies are faultless throughout and the band is outstanding, with many of the performers swapping instruments during the show. Cast members Mark Street and Ollie Gray perform an amazing rendition of the Dance with the Devil, the drum-piece made famous by Cozy Powell. Other notable moments include a tribute to Buddy Holly, a show-stopping rendition of Can’t Help Fallin’ In Love and an unforgettable Mick Jagger impersonation by Trevor Payne which leaves the audience roaring with laughter.
The cast consistently encourage the Pavilion crowd to sing-a-long and we are only too happy to oblige. Everybody is up on his or her feet to dance to the Time Warp in a section from the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
However, the finale is arguably the show’s finest moment. With brief segments from the likes of ABBA, the Beach Boys, and once again Buddy Holly, the audience go wild dancing in the aisles and screaming for more.
It won’t be surprising if That’ll Be the Day continues for the next 24 years.
