Review: Alan Geary: 2 November at Lakeside Arts Nottingham.
Powerful and compelling acting.
This absorbing Eastern Angles/Company of Angels production has a lot of the film noir about it. A new Dutch play with three protagonists, it’s set in a sadly clapped-out truck stop.
There are no villains, just believable people, each of whom takes you into his or her confidence, commenting on the unfolding action, and sometimes telling you what you’re about to see. It ends tragically.
The set is simple, and there’s no actual tableware, etc, to distract you from the characters; mime is used instead, to great effect.
A lonely, fading Mother (Janet Bamford) and her autistic daughter, Katalijne (Eugenia Caruso), run the truck stop. They become involved with no-hope lorry-driver Remco (Adam Best) and his wide-eyed plans to go it alone.
It’s a particularly powerful performance from Caruso - the rapid, staccato and obsessively repetitive speech is done well - but every actor is sufficiently compelling to evoke a strong emotional response from the audience.
