TWELFTH NIGHT at the Globe London

Stewart McGill went from Bristol (his Comedy of Errors review is on the site) to the Globe in London to catch Twelfth Night. His thoughts are below . . . Timothy Ramsden's review from 2002 is in our archive section - find it via the search engine.I travelled from Bristol to Bankside to see Twelfth Night at the Globe before it heads off to the USA for a tour. A packed house cheered, stomped and went wild for Mark Rylance and his wonderful troupe of male players who are making Shakespeare's Globe one of the most experimental and diverse arenas in the UK.The show is the most moving and also comic since John Barton's in 1969 and to those cynics who feel that the Globe is mere theme park country this proves how wrong the assumption is. The company are truly remarkable and reclaiming Shakespeare for all comers.

Intelligent, irreverent, well spoken, excellently cast. My wish is for a much longer season than the summer months allow but with the regular Middle Temple Hall dates and now tour previews -next year Richard 11-the season is extending.
