“Energy and powerful ballads.”

Energy, powerful ballads, and a stand out performance by Levi Kreis as himself not to mention the support provide by Killian Thomas Lefevre as Matthew, the friend who knows all about him and  Yiftach  'Iffy 'Mizrahi as Ben, the boys in his life, sometimes admiring, sometimes predatory,  make this an evening to experience – whether you will enjoy all depends on whether you feel for Kreis or want him to get on with life and stop being a drama queen from the American Bible belt who has a Tony Award in his portfolio. We are in his dressing room, the matinee is over, it went badly, and the evening show is being filmed – he is about to do a runner. But first he is restoring to drugs when Matthew appears, real or a figure from his past, to stop him. Things then take off into other worlds – the clever set by Jason Ardizzone West becomes other places, including Hollywood, in intriguing ways, while  up above a terrific band under Matthew Antonio Perri provides the music when Kreis is not himself playing the dressing room piano is Kreis' first musical  as Matthew tries to get him to work out his trauma by writing a song. In a sense this is still a work in progress which charts the dark side of success and the inhibitions a boy brought up in a Christian family in darkest America lives in after he escapes to that other world of show business success and pretty boys on demand. It has been brilliantly staged by the various creatives and Kreis delivers, exhausting although it is to watch, an amazing performance warts and all. The show is getting its premier at the King's Head and is Kreis's first musical. He has something he wants to say, and he seizes the chance to do so brilliantly.
